Photos and Story by Alexandria Polanosky, Multimedia Editor
Julie Garner and her boyfriend, Ralph Phelps, own and operate the Gold Family Farm in Athens, Ohio, which was started in 1937 by her grandfather, Walter Gold. Garner reopened the farm after she began dating Phelps. She said the farm started off very small but has been growing into a real business over the past few years.
The farm is operated entirely by Garner and her family members in addition to one nearby resident, Brenden Desmarais. They supply fresh produce, eggs, baked goods and handmade crafts. For most of the summer, Garner stocks a roadside stand in front of her home where locals can come and help themselves to freshly picked produce. She also sells her farm’s products at the Nelsonville Farmers Market every Saturday morning. She has recently become even more involved in the farmers market through taking on a volunteer management position.
Garner also raises chickens, pigs and goats on her farm, which are taken care of by her mother. During the day, she works as a social worker for drug and alcohol recovery, so she says she often gets time for herself. Garner now lives across the street from her childhood home, still occupied by her mother.
